The unparalleled reliability of the R-5 is due in part to its rugged construction. Housings and machined components are made of corrosion resistant, hard-anodized aluminm. All external hardware is made of stainless steel, with oceanographic and nuclear applications in mind.

The compact R-5 provides 4 N-m (3 lb-ft) of output torque. The drive train for the rotator uses a reversible synchronous motor, coupled to low backlash gearing. The rugged design of the gear train allows stalling of the output shaft without damage to the gear or the motor.

All ROS positioning units are available in either dual or single axis configurations.
